Great on-the-ground reporting.

PS: “Considering the United States’ role in Haiti’s history, this [TPS] seems like the least we could do.“

Fucking seriously.

If not for your reporting, we would not know what's really happening in Springfield. The corporate media have abandoned their original mission, and therefore have abandoned us. Thank you.

There’s a lot of good local reporting here and I imagine there will be a lot more national press here if ICE does in fact hit this city hard.

This reporter has also done some very good pieces on Springfield:

Keep up the good work. Rescinding TPS is consistent with the actions of the Trump regime. The regime has abrogated treaties and other international agreements. The only constant is inconsistency. The world no longer trusts us to keep our word.

I’ve taught hundreds of Haitian immigrants over the years at a local college, and have developed respect for their special reverence for education. Like all immigrants, Haitians have contributed greatly to this country. Thank you for this important post from Springfield.

Will echo Doug's comments regarding the US/France historic role in undermining Haitian sovereignty. Forcing Haiti to pay tens of billions to France as punishment for winning their war of independence in 1804. Kidnapping democratically elected president Aristeed in 2004. The Clinton's disgusting profiteering as a "humanitarian foundation" while cracking down on garment factory workers who organized for a 5cent raise in the Hanes factories, etc etc.

Great work and gratifying to know you're able to do the traveling required!

Here's a relatively short history of US interference in Haiti for anyone curious:

Maybe, just maybe, Trump isn't dumb enough to do something so revolting so soon! But I know Stephen Miller sure wants to keep kicking around brown people.

You gotta read this! Sam Freedman has written a chilling and detailed profile of Stephen Miller, the dark heart of the Trump regime.

The last paragraph was about as powerful a commentary on the present state of our country and administration as has been written.

Thanks for the update on Springfield. Just as a point of history, there are more than a few Underground Railroad stops in Ohio. It was a very popular route for escaping slaves, because it's one of the shortest routes to Canada, it bordered a slave state on one side(Kentucky) and has a long border with Lake Erie on the other side, where you could catch a boat to Canada. There's a great Underground Railroad Museum in Ashtabula, which was a northern terminus of the UG on Lake Erie. Oberlin and Sandusky were also hotbeds of anti-slavery activity.

I’m starting to think automatically that this administration is using ICE for establishing authoritarianism and crushing dissent, rather than primarily for addressing immigration, and I believe that. Thanks for reminding me that the Stephen Miller agenda is to ethnically cleanse this country of people who aren’t white and native English speakers. Both things are true, and I appreciate your coverage of both aspects. We’re in so much trouble. Best wishes to the Haitians in Springfield and their supportive neighbors. And best wishes to all decent people, really. I’m just waiting for ICE to surge more agents to Denver, which has enough MAGA people that protecting our neighbors is going to be even more difficult than we know.

Ransacking Springfield, targeting and rounding up Haitians will be another entirely idiotic, oppressive and destructive invasion by gangs of violent, reprobate fuckwits. In that area, do not give them anything they need - no hotel rooms, no restaurant food, refuse them all service. To any extent possible, businesses that serve them should be boycotted in perpetuity by all people of good conscience. Keep track, take names. If you support the Trump fascist ICE and Border Patrol troop deployments you should suffer consequences. There aren't enough MAGA fascists assholes with enough money to keep these businesses afloat on their own. Any business that supports them should be boycotted. There are more of us than them, and we can hit them back.
