My brain tells me these are the last spasms of a dying empire.

My eyes tell me that things are going to get worse before they get better.

My cynicism tells me that in alternate timeline, Madam President Harris would have been just as happy to start a war for Israel.

My rage tells me that whatever superficial differences may exist, Donkeys and Elephants are united in their love of suicide capitalism and white supremacy fueled empire.

What a day. I hope you all have a dog to hug in your life.

I have two Labrador Retrievers. Despite their knuckleheadedness, they are far, far intellectually superior to the mendacious assholes driving us to extinction.

Have them run for office, they have my vote.

Beautifully said. My train of thought exactly.

No new wars, amirite?

$1.5 trillion military budget. No health care, worsening education, higher taxes (thanks illegal tariffs), troops in our cities, fear in our streets. USA! USA! USA!

Thanks for a great, simple and elegant take on the act bullying and complicity that drags people and countries away from peace and the joy of living in this beautiful world.

EXACTLY! How stupid are we to fall for the same B.S. from a Republican President AGAIN! Does anyone recall Iraq and WMD that DID not exist? They just want too loot countries for their oil that if you haven’t noticed we are not getting any lower prices from the glut.

Walter Coker's avatar

And this war will almost assuredly lead to even higher oil prices, at least in the short term, as the Straits of Hormuz are deemed unsafe, and ships are forced to take other more expensive routes. Lose and lose some more...

Eric Deamer's avatar

Lots of people remember that. It just doesn't matter because foreign policy isn't decided democratically

M. St. Mitchels's avatar

And justify the insane military budget. Keep pointing toward what makes us "unsafe," then we need all this shit for our "safety." The Power Of Nightmares.

Great read, as always.

Chad Oulson was killed in a Florida cinema in 2014 for tossing popcorn at his assailant, a retired swat-team captain of police, who claimed the popcorn had rendered him more frightened than he had ever before been in his entire life. The killer was acquitted. Your barbaric country endorses pre-emptive strikes as judicial and ministerial policy, from top to the very bottom.

I wish I could argue with that but there’s no evidence to the contrary😢

I'll go further. The saying "once bitten, twice shy" seems to have been forgotten by the Rest of the World. We may have been deceived by the notion of trickle-down economics, but we now seem to be in the thrall of trickle-down war. The military-industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us of 80 years ago is here. It is directed at anything Muslim, anything oil, anything European, anything Anything. Mr Trump speaks of this action as being done for "America and her allies". It is America's allies that he has been threatening. It is America's allies he has been taxing with trade tariffs. Mr Trump doesn't have allies any longer. He has obsequious turncoats who have now forgotten not only where national interest for them starts and ends, but also international interest.

"The world shall be his footstool and the soul of Time His slave / Our Trump is marching on." One day, I hope after I am out of this sad world, the nations of the world will arise, not to acclaim Jesus' birth, but to form a global gang against this evil.

Hard to know what to say and hard to remain silent. What can one say to a ruthless elite who can’t ever be wealthy enough and a nation that can’t ever be lethal enough? Your “global gang” showing signs of an emerging solidarity would do much for our mental health.

An honest analysis of how we culminated in this would be very complicated. My simple answer is- everything. If only our unspoken ethos had not been acquisitive ambition.

bwm's avatar

We are all the bad guys now. Nothing other than a desperate, tragic, obscene attempt to distract from a failing presidency determined to drag all of us down with it. Bombing a girls’ elementary school- that’s what we’ve been given to be proud of.

John Hartley's avatar

Well said Mr Nolan, I believe this orange cult leader is threatening and or going through with this war plan to distract from the fact that when he loses his hold on our country he very well may lose his hold on his freedom. The rest of the repelicans just going along because they have to cheat to win. He thinks he can steal the future elections by not holding them or not counting the votes.

Becky Foster's avatar

Far too drastically, this military attack may be as much as anything else a desperate attempt to distract most folks from, yes, the Epstein files. Perhaps there is a smidgen of shame that still remains, or would there be costs to the powerful who would be exposed by the Epstein nightmare?

Donna's avatar

There’s nothing like starting a war to deflect from the country’s many problems.

When the authoritarian wants to solidify his power, he'll try to unite the citizens with an issue. A war against a weaker nation provides a convenient expedient. I'm sure the Board of Peace will proclaim this a victory for freedom, yes?

Out of the so many wars we've been in, which ones didn't we start? Revolutionary, Civil (I know), WW2? We love wars

A. Ok's avatar

I'd include World War I and Korea, too.

treehill's avatar

The US intervened in Korea because its proxy was losing to Kim's forces. So it arguably started that war as well.

And our “opposition” leader is frothing at the mouth for this war.
