Upgraded to paid to say this is awesome and I love it. Also, I was struck by the fact that part of the reason behind moving to streaming away from broadcast and theaters is BECAUSE of the lack of royalties. I had always thought it was about the technology and vertical integration, but thanks to this newsletter I'm seeing how it's also about increasing profits by reducing profit sharing with labor.

Fantastic article. I a faculty member at a public university, and we're lucky to be unionized. But there's so little passion for how important that union is among the rank and file that it's depressing.

Really cool article and a fresh take of what modern unions can be. I think you could have easily made the leap and argument that that by not thinking this way (being a vehicle to help your members adapt to new income streams) is how the rest of the labor movement lost its power in America.

As a Laborer's Union member, I see the two sided and divided political system alive and well within the Halls. In one hand, it has its pros in ways for benefits, rights for their workers, and their presence alone can tune up a business. I would not have lasted as long as I have in the construction industry without them. On the other hand, they play politics like the mob, digging deep, secret handshakes, and you never 'go against the family.' Knowing what I know now (after 25 years) would I choose this path again? -the answer is NO.
