I saw Hamilton in St. Paul and another audience member had to mention this blog. HamNo was probably too proud to ask people to support the blog but he's out here living it people. He's in the trenches. Pay for the things you like or they will go away
Personally, once I like a writer, I look forward to whatever they may cover or produce. Your labor coverage is very important and very well done, but everybody deserves a little pie now and then. Proletarians and pastries!
You're the man. Happy to continue to support. Happy to read your labour stuff, even if the subject matter is the green veggies on my reading plate. But please do continue to drop the occasional bracing, bon motty foray into other stuff. Big or small, relevant or random - No particularal topic is good but your writing makes it so.
I forgot to say thank you - not just for "How Things Work", generally, but for this day's information. It's important for people to understand the financial aspects of this work and I appreciate the transparency.
Great article and the honesty is much appreciated. I both do and donβt envy writers like yourself. Being able to go out and experience/learn about the world and then express yourself through writing is beautiful. But the independent (and the professional beat as you expressed) comes with a lot of insecurity. Iβm guessing journalism is gasping for air right now because of many factors, but predominantly that people donβt read as much as they used to. Idk but Iβll spread good writing, like yours, as much as I can.
Thanks, Hamilton, for keeping this going. Iβm a big fan going back to the Gawkker days and, while I appreciate that labor is your primary topic, I really appreciate the non-labor topics sprinkled in. Maybe you can cover the unionization of a Fage plant with side commentary on the current state of the yogurt wars?
As a side note, I think Iβve shared the original Fage article with more people than any other article, not just because itβs the correct take, but because itβs the best illustration of of how I think about any product/item that I absolutely prefer. Iβm not sure thatβs helping your quest for more paying customers though.
Last thing. Were you dog? Iβm sure it was just a side post to throw out some jokes under a pen name and get some clicks for ads. But then it blew up and became a thing. It was you though, right?
Iβm very glad this exists, and will keep auto-renewing my paid subscription for as long as it keeps existing. and I like the stealth βhahaha hereβs a side of labor radicalization with your politics/media screedβ tactic :)
Totally worked on me. Followed Hamilton over here from Deadspin and enjoy his occasional Jaguars Junction on Defector. Always enjoyed his writing, but the more extensive labor coverage has given me an eye-opening perspective, which I really appreciate.
Iβm a born and bred union supporter. Unfortunately, I entered a non- unionized profession - law. (Now retired, thank goodness!) But the more of country we can organize, the better for everyone in many ways. We werenβt rich lawyers, though, so I can only afford a few subscriptions at a time. I reassess every few months. Iβll probably start paying here shortly. Iβm seriously considering canceling my NYT subscription, theyβve gotten so bad and they are so expensive.
I love your Substack and, even though Iβm broke, am more than happy to keep supporting your journalism because it actually matters! Anyone can dash off a summary of whatever is going on, but your depth of knowledge shines through.
Proud to be a subscriber. You consistently open my eyes to new ways to think about social issues. My conversations with my adult children, wife and friends are a lot more interesting since I started reading the substack.
Sign me up for auto renewal! I donβt want to miss anything you write.
Iβve been following you since your Gawker days, and you just get better and betterβ¦β¦.Loved βThe Hammerβ and got to see you in person in DC and Atlantaβ¦..Reading you gives me hopeβ¦.(and usually a good laugh).
Have been reading for awhile and thinking about supporting for a couple months. Today's the day. Just subscribed. This rules. Putting your money where your mouth is feels pretty good, actually.
For the record, I got here through Jaguars Junction.

I'd read about pie.

βProletariats and Pastriesβ sounds like an excellent title for a newsletter! π€

Fuck it, I'm in. Take my money and use it to buy an almond croissant. That's all I ask.

I subscribe specifically because of your ability to cover any topic with eloquence. Including asking for money.
