KIDS are doing this...
When 'kids' are are savvy and plugged in enough to be aware of the machinations of a Writers Guild Strike, there is hope for the future...These guys did their research!
One again, so good. That's right - they just want love? I still don't know why billionares keep having to make money, why they don't just stop or give it away or something or pay their taxes at least? Bye to Mr. Brown.
Pres. Brown's piece was disappointing on many levels. It is inane to think students could cancel a man who runs one of the largest media conglomerates in the world & was literally on a stage with a microphone being broadcast onto a jumbotron. Also, this event took place in Boston, site of one of the most important protests in this county's history, the Boston Tea Party. But most disappointing is the fact that the alum who BU is most proud of is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who from a jail cell lamented the stumbling block of "the white moderate, who is more devoted to 'order' than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: 'I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action.'" Personally I think Dr. King would have been proud of & joined this year's BU graduates.
in 2018, a boston university prof (who was a fan of gawker i guess?) invited me to talk to his journalism class about ‘the future of media.’
the 30 or so students forced to listen to me could barely stay awake -- until i did an impression mocking mark zuckerberg, which they correctly recognized as the only part worth their time and attention. which is to say: the kids are alright.
Perfectly said as always. Popehat's take was a fun read as well, although he had a shocking number of people in the comments decrying cancel culture and the end of civilization as we know it...
Had to read this twice. Brilliant. I’ve always thought that when wealthy people owned everything the only thing left were people’s minds and bodies. That’s really all it is. Can you imagine the high fiving in their hidden circle of “friends” (because they don’t have friends, just competition)?
Makes me feel really good that I get people’s admiration on and off the internet for free. No posturing necessary. Take that, you rat bastards.
So anyone successful in a larger sense, doesn't have friends, just 'competition'? That's a ridiculous statement that's about wish fulfillment, not reality. Successful people are often interested in the money, but a lot of them are also driven to DO MORE and stand out from the crowd. You're not in his head, and you have no idea what this head of a studio does or doesn't think. You also have no idea how he treats his family, friends and close associates. P.S. 'Internet admiration' is always one step removed from reality. You're placing yourself in a little pond, where you're comfortable. It's much braver to face the larger world than exist in your own silo.
If you’d like to lay roses at the feet of the ultra wealthy, you’re welcome to. I won’t join you.
How he treats his family is irrelevant and so is how hard you think he works. In what world is it actually conscionable that one person make tens of millions while they bargain to NOT pay other people? “But he’s a nice guy!” Okay…
And how is he DOING more? Another vacation home? Perhaps a modest sub zero fridge for the garage? Maybe giving his maid a day off in the summer? Rich people are not being rewarded for their work ethic. They are not doing more than the people making less. They are simply valued more by a company.
When someone making as much as he does, invests that money back into the people who are the real Atlases of his industry, he will have my respect.
Again, you're making MORE assumptions about what he does with his money and the type of personality he has. As for bargaining about how employees get paid; you'd do well to study economics. Also, if you think this one current head of a single studio, both created the existing system and is able to change it at will, you (again), know nothing about business and how markets work.
P.S. The Atlases of the industry are the people who create that industry and then provide the necessary guidance that keeps it functional. If you think running a major studio is an easy, low stress job, you (again), know nothing. Running a business is hard; the bigger the business, the more factors to juggle and the larger the stakes.
I am a dumbshit in academia but really...how can people not get it? I ask myself this every day. I will never forget the time another academic told me to read Anne Applebaum's book & she listed one of the great dangers of our age as cancel culture. We DON'T but it's weird that we are so stupid. However, I do have one retired professor friend who went to BU that day to be part of the protest--so yay I guess?

appallingly coarse and deliberately abusive” “obscenities” aimed at Zaslav from students who were “attempting to implement the cancel culture”
For 500 million bucks you can cancel culture me ALL DAY LONG...BTW, I'll be on my private island ENJOYING my booty instead of using it to hurt people because they don't acquiesce to my demands for love and admiration
Pathetic. An article that glorifies a mob and mob mentality. The hyenas taking down the lion, simply because they like the sound of their own voices and the feel of their self-righteous behavior.
The author's belief that it is terrible to be middle-aged and successful, are the jealous whines one expects from those projecting ignorance in lieu of accomplishment.
If there's someone better than HamNo at explaining class/power dynamics in this country with sentences so simple as to make it all seem self-evident to the point where you wonder what dummy would ever try to argue the other side of things, well, I'd like to see that

Do I hear a 2024 commencement speaker commenting?

Get fucked, billionaires.

He should pay his writers.

After reading your column and comments below, it must be fun being the tallest in a very shallow intellectual pool! Perhaps, add some water.

Everyone is just jealous. That’s entirely it. Spot on.

This article reminds me (in theme) of the article that first got me hooked on Mr Nolan
