it's wild how many incredibly talented journalists got their start at Gawker and Jez. Great job thus far and keep at it Nolan you're doing such important work. Thank you for keeping your publication free. I'm probably not the only one who has a number of writers they enjoy but can't afford them all at once so does kind of a rotation of a couple subscriptions.
Since you told the fascinating story about Martin Luther King Jr in St Augustine, at least I now understand your interest in alligators. I once heard a bunch of Floridians chanting on the streets of the French Quarter just before the Sugar Bowl, “it's great / to be /a Florida Gator, oh it's great / to be / a Florida Gator!”
I asked for The Hammer for Christmas last year, but the needle didn’t move much. I asked for a How things work tshirt for my birthday and two weeks later, in the next update, we learn that the substack achieved solvency. Coincidence? I think not haha.
My neighbor has a sweatshirt with the Pullman Strike political cartoon flanked above and below with the phrase “No War…But Class War.” Hers is a Heather crew neck with white screen print, and the toon appears a bit muddled as a result. I’m thinking white shirt with black print would look sharp? You could release one and save me having to submit a design and custom order on one of those tshirt sites.
I’m including this link instead of the National Parks website because the Parks site explainer attached to the cartoon has been propagandized.
Edited in case the tone came off as flippant when I was trying to be joking. I do want to add how much I appreciate you, this site, and the stand you continue to take!
I recently unsubscribed to many Substack newsletters as I was just getting too depressed. Yours I kept (and I’m a paying subscriber…yay!). Keep doing what you’re doing. I’ll keep reading until civilization collapses. Shouldn’t be long now….
You’re the best, dude. Thank you for all the work that you do.
I’m currently considering a career change, one that offers two tracks: union, or non-union. If I make this change, I’m choosing the former, and it’s because of the work you’ve done here.
I was a paid subscriber, but felt there were too many repetitive columns about Labor and the need for unionization. All true but you'd proven the case. Now, I'm seeing more diversity in the work and re-subscribing as paid.
Congrats on another milestone, Hamilton. Yours was the first Substack publication that I subscribed to, having been a fan of your writing for In These Times. The latest newsletter from the head of the Massachusetts Teachers Association (of which I have been a member for 37 years) has a section that talks about how the state's pension fund is used to invest in bad stuff, and includes a link to the union's Pension Task Force that's trying to correct that, and to your ITT piece, "Pensions can be labor's weapon" (which you also wrote about here).

Yours is my favorite substack, and I own an autographed copy of THE HAMMER.
A t-shirt that read “WE EAT FASCISTS”
would be a best seller, and a great Christmas
present!
Good idea, mysterious stranger.
I’d buy the shit out of that.
Great idea! A variation might be “This t-shirt kills fascists” (a la Woody Guthrie).
Love; karma; knowledge that you, my friend, are helping to keep writing alive.

Thank you for your great work. Always thoughtful and engaging.

I will begin paying once I'm employed again. Fairly new follower, but looking forward to lending my support once I can.

Hey, my dogs are pretty demanding and I'm still here supporting you with my dollars. And if I can do it...

You’re doing a fine job!
Always appreciate your clear thinking, and also thanks for the photo from my favorite weird Florida zoo!
Congrats Hamilton! One of the only newsletters I always read.

Thank you for everything. I can give a little to your fund and when I can I will pay my subscription <3
